Woot!!! We won! Just by competing, but also numerous awards, including a category award, and a chance for one of our young scientists to go to nationals!

On April 1 and 2, six sixth graders from Baden Academy competed in the Pittsburgh Science and Engineering Fair.

Gavin Phillips competed with a Engineering Project “Robotic Penguin Cam” and won a Collegiate Award.

Cameron Rankin also competed with an engineering project “Permanent Magnet Generator” and was awarded the ASM Materials Education Foundation Affiliate Award and The Garimella Family Sponsor Award.

Ariel Schmude competed in Physical Science with her project “Surface Tension in Bubbles” and took home a 10 dollar gift card for a contest won during the competition.

Roman Solomich competed in Consumer Science with “Commercial Detergent vs Homemade.” He said “I really enjoyed it. I want to do the science fair again next year. It really was a great experience.”

Lexi Watt competed in Engineering with models of legs affected by Osteosarcoma cancer. She was recognized by the U.S. Navy/U.S. Marine Corps (Office of Naval Research) with an Affliate Award.

Courtney Webster, yep that’s me, competed in Life Science with “Binding Without Eggs.” I won won a Collegiate award and a category award.

On Friday, April 1, we did the interviews.  Each of us presented about 2 or 3 times. Each time we learned from the judges and got better. That day two collegiate judges came around to interview me. At the end of the science fair they presented me with an award. I was so happy. The next day was the awards ceremony and they started presenting scholarships to high schoolers. Then, it was the category awards and they started with fourth place in 6th grade and went to high school. Out of 66 competitors in life science I won 2nd place! Which means I get to have a chance to go to Washington D.C. I learned a lot and am inspired to come back and enter the competition again.
